As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets a number of our criteria for what a quality bed should have. With eight unique layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud utilizes all of the proper materials in its construction. Dreamcloud Mattress Vs Nest Alexander Hybrid
From the tufted cashmere cover that provides great airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Resting below are a mix of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress contains better quality relaxation materials than most other hybrid mattresses.

Even though it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there’s no hug or significant shaping to the mattress. If you’re looking to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, especially for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Dreamcloud Mattress Vs Nest Alexander Hybrid

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Mattress Vs Nest Alexander Hybrid

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

Now I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other people to present their view too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of this mattress for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Mattress Vs Nest Alexander Hybrid

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress Vs Nest Alexander Hybrid

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
