Construction Dreamcloud Mattress vs Avocado

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Mattress vs Avocado

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three additional people to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud Mattress vs Avocado

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress vs Avocado

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
