Construction Dreamcloud Mattress Try In Store

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Mattress Try In Store

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of this mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud Mattress Try In Store

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress Try In Store

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
