Construction Dreamcloud Mattress Smell
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Mattress Smell
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to present their view too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud Mattress Smell
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
When buying a new mattress, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress Smell
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
