Construction Dreamcloud Mattress Rev
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Mattress Rev
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just explaining the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Mattress Rev
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress Rev
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
