Construction Dreamcloud Mattress Keep Rolled
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Mattress Keep Rolled
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to give their view too. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Mattress Keep Rolled
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.
While purchasing a new bed, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress Keep Rolled
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.
I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
