Construction Dreamcloud Mattress In Store
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Mattress In Store
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I want to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than simply explaining the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Mattress In Store
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
While purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress In Store
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.
I am particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
