Construction Dreamcloud Mattress Delays
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Mattress Delays
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other people to give their opinion as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than just describing the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud Mattress Delays
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
When purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress Delays
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.
I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
