Construction Dreamcloud Mattress Comparisons

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Mattress Comparisons

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

Now I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional people to present their opinion as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Mattress Comparisons

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress Comparisons

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
