Construction Dreamcloud Mattress Bedframe
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Mattress Bedframe
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I want to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to present their view as well. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Mattress Bedframe
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
While purchasing a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Mattress Bedframe
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.
I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
