Construction Dreamcloud Matress Impacking Review

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Matress Impacking Review

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of the three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional individuals to give their view too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.

firmness test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Matress Impacking Review

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Matress Impacking Review

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
