Construction Dreamcloud Indeed
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Indeed
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their view too. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Indeed
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
While buying a new bed, most men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Indeed
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
