Construction Dreamcloud Hybrid Mattresses
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Hybrid Mattresses
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
At this point I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other individuals to give their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than simply describing the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Hybrid Mattresses
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
When purchasing a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Hybrid Mattresses
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
