Construction Dreamcloud Heat

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Heat

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of the three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

Now I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to give their opinion as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud Heat

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Heat

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
