Construction Dreamcloud For Heavy Sleepers

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud For Heavy Sleepers

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

Now I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to present their view too. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just describing the feel of the mattress for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud For Heavy Sleepers

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud For Heavy Sleepers

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
