As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets many of our standards for what a excellent mattress should provide. With eight exceptional layers of support and comfort, the DreamCloud uses all of the right materials in its construction. Dreamcloud For Back Sleepers
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives good airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud is designed to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Resting below are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress contains better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid beds.

Even though it uses multiple memory foam layers, there’s not any hug or significant contouring to the mattress. If you’re searching to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, particularly so for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Dreamcloud For Back Sleepers

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud For Back Sleepers

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of the three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to give their view too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.

firmness test

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dreamcloud For Back Sleepers

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud For Back Sleepers

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
