Construction Dreamcloud Distribution Center United States

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Distribution Center United States

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

At this point I want to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to give their opinion too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud Distribution Center United States

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Distribution Center United States

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
