Construction Dreamcloud Breaking
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dreamcloud Breaking
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to present their opinion too. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just describing the feel of this mattress to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud Breaking
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
When buying a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Breaking
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
