Construction Dreamcloud Bed Frame With Headboard
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Bed Frame With Headboard
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other people to give their view too. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dreamcloud Bed Frame With Headboard
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
When purchasing a new bed, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Bed Frame With Headboard
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
