Construction DreamCloud – Bad Reviews

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. DreamCloud – Bad Reviews

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

Now I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I invited three other individuals to give their view as well. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. DreamCloud – Bad Reviews

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new bed, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. DreamCloud – Bad Reviews

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
