Construction Dreamcloud Aria
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Aria
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
At this point I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other people to present their opinion as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than just describing the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Aria
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
While buying a new bed, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Aria
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
