Construction Dreamcloud Air Mattress
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud Air Mattress
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to give their opinion as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than simply describing the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dreamcloud Air Mattress
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud Air Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.
I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
