Because it’s a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets many of our standards for what a quality bed should provide. With eight unique layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud utilizes all the right materials in its construction. Dreamcloud 2.0
From the tufted cashmere cover that gives great airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud is designed to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Resting below are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this bed contains better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid beds.

Despite the fact that it uses multiple memory foam layers, there’s not any hug or significant contouring to the bed. If you’re looking to sink into a mattress, then proceed from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, especially so for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Dreamcloud 2.0

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dreamcloud 2.0

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to present their view too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just describing the feel of this DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dreamcloud 2.0

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dreamcloud 2.0

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
