Construction Dream Cloud vs Serta Icofort
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dream Cloud vs Serta Icofort
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other people to give their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to simply explaining the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dream Cloud vs Serta Icofort
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
While purchasing a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud vs Serta Icofort
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
