Construction Dream Cloud vs Purple
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud vs Purple
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three additional individuals to give their opinion too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to simply describing the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dream Cloud vs Purple
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.
While purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud vs Purple
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.
I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
