Construction Dream Cloud vs Novaform

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dream Cloud vs Novaform

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional people to give their opinion as well. This will give you a much better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dream Cloud vs Novaform

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new bed, the majority of men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud vs Novaform

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
