Construction Dream Cloud vs Nectar

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud vs Nectar

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to give their view as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just describing the feel of this mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dream Cloud vs Nectar

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud vs Nectar

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
