Construction Dream Cloud vs Casper

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud vs Casper

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I invited three other individuals to present their view too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dream Cloud vs Casper

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud vs Casper

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
