Construction Dream Cloud vs Brentwood

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud vs Brentwood

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional people to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just describing the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to know what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dream Cloud vs Brentwood

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud vs Brentwood

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
