Construction Dream Cloud vs Amerisleep

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dream Cloud vs Amerisleep

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other individuals to give their opinion as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply explaining the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dream Cloud vs Amerisleep

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud vs Amerisleep

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
