Because it’s a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets a number of our standards for what a quality bed should provide. With eight exceptional layers of support and comfort, the DreamCloud uses all of the right materials in its construction. Dream Cloud Sleep Sherpa
From the tufted cashmere cover that provides good airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud is designed to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this bed includes better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid beds.

Even though it uses multiple memory foam layers, there is not any hug or significant contouring to the bed. If you’re looking to sink into a mattress, then proceed from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support center keeps you aligned all night long, especially so for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Dream Cloud Sleep Sherpa

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together. Dream Cloud Sleep Sherpa

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

Now I want to let you know that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I invited three other people to present their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of this mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dream Cloud Sleep Sherpa

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Sleep Sherpa

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I am particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
