As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets many of our standards for what a quality bed must have. With eight unique layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud utilizes all of the right materials in its construction. Dream Cloud Review
From the tufted cashmere cover that provides great airflow, to the gel memory foam at the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to deliver a cooler night’s sleep. Resting below are a mixture of memory foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress includes better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid beds.

Despite the fact that it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there’s no hug or significant contouring to the bed. If you are searching to sink into a mattress, proceed from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support center keeps you aligned all night long, especially for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Dream Cloud Review

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dream Cloud Review

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.

At this point I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional people to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dream Cloud Review

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Review

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
