Construction Dream Cloud Pie
The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the distinct materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dream Cloud Pie
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
Now I want to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
As opposed to just describing the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can find the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, therefore I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dream Cloud Pie
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.
When buying a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Pie
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
