Construction Dream Cloud Overfilled Microplush Mattress Pad

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud Overfilled Microplush Mattress Pad

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dream Cloud Overfilled Microplush Mattress Pad

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Overfilled Microplush Mattress Pad

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
