Construction Dream Cloud Opal
The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud Opal
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the spaces between them permit continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from these springs.
Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to give their view as well. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you can see from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
Rather than just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Dream Cloud Opal
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.
While buying a new mattress, most people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Opal
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I am especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
