Construction Dream Cloud Mattress
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud Mattress
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.
At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to present their view as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the mattress and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
As opposed to just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Dream Cloud Mattress
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Mattress
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.
I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
