Construction Dream Cloud Mattress Video Reviews
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud Mattress Video Reviews
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the spaces between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.
After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this point I want to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other individuals to give their view as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.
As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
As opposed to simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Dream Cloud Mattress Video Reviews
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome option for couples.
When purchasing a new bed, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Mattress Video Reviews
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m particularly interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
