Construction Dream Cloud Mattress Twin Size

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud Mattress Twin Size

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to give their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply explaining the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. Dream Cloud Mattress Twin Size

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Mattress Twin Size

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
