Construction Dream Cloud Mattress Pad

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play , I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Dream Cloud Mattress Pad

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three other people to present their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I chose to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my shoulders and hips. But, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to another. Dream Cloud Mattress Pad

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Mattress Pad

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did at the middle. Going closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
