As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud meets a number of our standards for what a quality mattress should have. With eight exceptional layers of support and comfort, the DreamCloud utilizes all the right materials in its construction. Dream Cloud Mattress Foundation
From the tufted cashmere cover that provides great airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud is designed to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mix of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this bed includes better quality relaxation materials than most other hybrid beds.

Despite the fact that it utilizes multiple memory foam layers, there’s not any hug or significant shaping to the mattress. If you are searching to sink into a mattress, proceed from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support core keeps you aligned all night long, particularly for all you back sleepers out there.

Construction Dream Cloud Mattress Foundation

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud Mattress Foundation

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting mild hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three additional people to give their opinion as well. This will provide you with a better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this mattress is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just describing the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do so, I put a pressure map above the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported while the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dream Cloud Mattress Foundation

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Mattress Foundation

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it will give you.

I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
