Construction Dream Cloud Hybrid Mattress Reviews

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud Hybrid Mattress Reviews

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the bed and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I invited three additional people to give their view as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply explaining the feel of this mattress to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – When on my back, my weight was equally dispersed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like when the other individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Dream Cloud Hybrid Mattress Reviews

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While buying a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Hybrid Mattress Reviews

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it is likely to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
