Construction Dream Cloud Hutchinson
The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play , I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud Hutchinson
Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester mix for a soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you’ll discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I want to note that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I invited three other people to present their opinion too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the mattress.
As you can find in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the mattress, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is really firm.
Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.
As opposed to just explaining the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – When on my backside, my weight was equally distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to find out what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another. Dream Cloud Hutchinson
To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome option for couples.
When purchasing a new bed, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Hutchinson
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll give you.
I’m especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt just as supported at the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wished to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
