Construction Dream Cloud Bed Review

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Dream Cloud Bed Review

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The middle of these three layers is particularly essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I started to interact with all the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my view on the general firmness level of this DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view too. This will give you a much better feeling of the firmness range you can see from the bed.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of the mattress to you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the outcomes on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel as though I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I still felt supported while the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which can be crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you’ll want to find out what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Dream Cloud Bed Review

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then measured the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This indicates that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Dream Cloud Bed Review

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over to the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
