Construction Does The Dreamcloud Matress Sag Over Time?

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all the distinct materials at play here, I am stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Does The Dreamcloud Matress Sag Over Time?

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel trapped in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially important because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of those small ventilations encourages more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to give their view as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you may see from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry norm of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this bed is really firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it is definitely a solid bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I believed the DreamCloud did a fantastic job of lifting my hips upward and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a spouse, you will want to know what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Does The Dreamcloud Matress Sag Over Time?

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Does The Dreamcloud Matress Sag Over Time?

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I’m especially interested to determine if the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to fulfill the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
