Construction Does Dreamcloud Mattress Require Boxspring

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to see how well they interact together. Does Dreamcloud Mattress Require Boxspring

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The center of the three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the whole mattress.

Firmness

After taking a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the general firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three additional individuals to give their opinion as well. This will provide you with a much better feeling of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compared to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the mattress a 7.5 and concur with the other testers that it’s definitely a good mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than just explaining the feel of this mattress for you, I chose to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can find the results on the picture below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed in any way. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the mattress and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and out of the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if the other person crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that’s detectable from one side of the mattress from another. Does Dreamcloud Mattress Require Boxspring

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Does Dreamcloud Mattress Require Boxspring

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m particularly interested to see whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the bed as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a little compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
