Construction Does Dreamcloud Mattress Need A Box Spring

The DreamCloud has an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to provide the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.

Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Does Dreamcloud Mattress Need A Box Spring

construction

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The middle of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is made up of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at releasing heat, so the inclusion of those small ventilations promotes more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions into the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the distances between them permit continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying mild hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

Now I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving only my view on the overall firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional individuals to present their opinion as well. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent that this bed is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just describing the feel of the mattress to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do so, I put a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is denoted from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – When on my backside, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress in any way. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my belly, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at nighttime. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of movement that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from the other. Does Dreamcloud Mattress Need A Box Spring

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When buying a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to mimic different body parts and different sized sleepers. Does Dreamcloud Mattress Need A Box Spring

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re likely to encounter some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a partner and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I felt a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
