Construction Consumer Reports Dreamcloud
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a humongous 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play , I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Consumer Reports Dreamcloud
Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft texture up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.
Foam Layers – Below the cover, you will discover three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s made up of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages more cooling.
Pocketed Coils – The base layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist to disperse motion throughout the mattress. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.
Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole mattress.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by putting mild hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a nice lift from the springs.
Now I want to let you know that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three additional people to present their view too. This will provide you with a better sense of the firmness range you may expect from the bed.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this mattress, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the market standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.
Rather than simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I chose to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map above the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, therefore I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.
Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips upward and from the mattress, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with comparative ease.
If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse, you will want to find out what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress from another. Consumer Reports Dreamcloud
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates somebody rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
While buying a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the bed or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, along with a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers. Consumer Reports Dreamcloud
– 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
– 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
– 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
– 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
Even though you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.
If you are going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m especially interested to see whether the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Laying on my back, I felt as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.
Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the bed in the morning when you are tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
