As a hybrid mattress, the DreamCloud fulfills many of our criteria for what a quality mattress must provide. With eight exceptional layers of comfort and support, the DreamCloud utilizes all the right materials in its construction. Consumer Report On Dreamcloud Bed
From the tufted cashmere cover that provides great airflow, to the gel memory foam in the uppermost comfort layer, the DreamCloud was made to promote a cooler night’s sleep. Below that are a mixture of polyurethane foam and latex layers, meaning this mattress contains better quality comfort materials than most other hybrid beds.

Despite the fact that it uses multiple memory foam layers, there’s no hug or significant shaping to the mattress. If you are searching to sink into a mattress, then move on from the DreamCloud.

A pocketed coil support center keeps you aligned all night long, particularly so for all you back sleepers on the market.

Construction Consumer Report On Dreamcloud Bed

The DreamCloud has a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to get into these layers to understand how well they interact with one another. Consumer Report On Dreamcloud Bed

construction

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft texture up top. It’s also built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially essential for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The bottom layer of foam transitions to the firmer support segment of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them permit steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a peek at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that individuals of different body types and shapes will sense firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I invited three other people to give their view too. This will give you a better feeling of the firmness range you may expect from the mattress.

firmness test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. While you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to just explaining the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can find the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map

Back – Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel as though I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and also the pocketed coils helped lift me from the bed and keep my back in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming in my hips and shoulders. But, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my belly, I believed that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to shift across these positions with relative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you intend on sharing your mattress with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like if the other individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Consumer Report On Dreamcloud Bed

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it generated: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

motion transfer test

The DreamCloud demonstrates a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress then measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Consumer Report On Dreamcloud Bed

sinkage test

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your bed with a spouse and will need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will give you.

I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compacted bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring versions.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a good job of supporting my body.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on the mattress in the morning when you’re tying your shoes and getting ready for work. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly good.
