Construction Compare Dreamcloud To Brooklyn Bedding Aurora

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the distinct materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Compare Dreamcloud To Brooklyn Bedding Aurora

construction-1

Cover – The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel trapped in the mattress. The center of these three layers is especially essential because of the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent rebound and assist disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam is found in the bottom of the mattress, with the major use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After having a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by putting light hand pressure into the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and first layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could sense some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with all the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from these springs.

At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of this mattress, I enlisted three other individuals to give their view as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can find in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean rating of 7.75. Compare this to the market norm of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear that this bed is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the other testers that it’s definitely a good bed. At the same time you’ll feel some slight sinking because of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you out of the mattress and make you feel as though you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

Rather than simply describing the feel of the mattress for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on the mattress. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my back, side, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – Once on my backside, my weight was equally dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the mattress and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach – Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is crucial for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse, you’ll want to know what it will feel like if another individual crawls out of bed in the break of dawn or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of movement that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. Compare Dreamcloud To Brooklyn Bedding Aurora

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates somebody tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still regard the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means that you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your mattress mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this an awesome solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

When purchasing a new bed, the majority of people wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of different sizes and densities (a 6 pound medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, along with a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Compare Dreamcloud To Brooklyn Bedding Aurora

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to find the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you are going to share your mattress with a spouse and will need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll give you.

I am particularly interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will endure the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Laying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did in the middle. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a bit of compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the coil system beneath. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it’d feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly well.
