Construction Compare Dreamcloud And Idle Mattress

The DreamCloud features a tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down to foam and wrapped coil parts, which operate in tandem to supply the sleeper with a strong innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.

Given all of the different materials at play , I am stoked to dive into these layers to understand how well they interact together. Compare Dreamcloud And Idle Mattress

construction-1

Cover – The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester mix for a luxuriously soft texture up top. Additionally, it is built with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant relaxation.

Foam Layers – Under the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of polyurethane. While these segments are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck in the bed. The center of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is good at releasing heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils – The base layer of polyurethane transitions to the firmer support segment of this mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in moderating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer – A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies in the base of the mattress, with the major function of cradling the pocketed coils and offering a sound foundation for the entire mattress.

Firmness

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure into the bed and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand flowed into the material and I could sense some instant pressure relief. Pushing in farther, I began to interact with the pocketed coils beneath and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to let you know that people of different body shapes and types will sense firmness differently. Rather than giving only my opinion on the general firmness level of the mattress, I invited three additional individuals to give their opinion too. This will provide you with a much better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

firmness test-1

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it a mean score of 7.75. Compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this bed is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a solid mattress. At the same time you’ll feel some small sinking because of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of this mattress.

Pressure Map

As opposed to simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do so, I placed a pressure map on top of the bed and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the outcomes on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

pressure map-1

Back – When on my back, my weight was evenly dispersed throughout the mattress, therefore I did not feel as though I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover gave quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side – As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my hips and shoulders. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what distress I felt in this position.

Stomach – Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which can be key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to shift across these positions with comparative ease.

Motion Transfer

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to find out what it will feel like when another individual crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress from the other. Compare Dreamcloud And Idle Mattress

To show you this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and then quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud demonstrates a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone tossing around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This indicates you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your mattress partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great solution for couples.

Sinkage Test

While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put 4 balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compacted the top.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to mimic distinct body parts and different sized sleepers. Compare Dreamcloud And Idle Mattress

6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.

10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.

50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.

100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

If you’re going to share your mattress with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s likely to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am especially interested to determine whether the DreamCloud will suffer the exact same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt just as supported in the edge of the mattress as I did at the center. Going closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing overly dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over to the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a good job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wished to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on top of the mattress in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for work. A good deal of foam mattresses experience a lot of compression in this position, but the DreamCloud really held up fairly good.
